Things I Do And I Plan To Do…….
During
the reading instruction, I split my students in to groups low, medium, and
high. We would do a picture walk, and students would predict the story. After
predicting the story the students would read the story on their own. I would
listen to the students read a few pages to make sure they were reading the text
correctly. When the students finish the reading for the day, we would discuss
together about the story. While discussing the story the students were able to
ask questions about things they did not understand or discuss their
predictions. The other part of the class will do independent reading while I am
reading with individual groups. In the future I would like to be able to use
the following strategies in all my reading groups such as questioning,
clarifying, summarizing, and predicting.
Things I Do Not Do…….
I
do not do the Collaborative Strategic Reading. I really like how there are
different roles in the Collaborative Strategic reading method. I never thought
about assigning students in the reading group to be in charge of something. I
think this is a wonderful idea and can make the reading groups fun. In the book
it says there is a leader of the group which tells the groups what to read and
what strategy to apply next. The Clunk experts help the group figure out the
meaning of the unknown words. This would be perfect for third grade because they
start using dictionaries and could look up words to find there meaning. The
gist expert guides the group members towards development and contains main
ideas of the story. The question expert guides the group to generate different
types of questions to make sure the group understands the important parts of the
story. The time keeper keeps track of how long the group spends on each
strategy. The encourager watches the groups and gives feed back. I think this
method would take a lot of time, effort, monitoring, and organizing but I think
it would be a great strategy to use.
Things I Need To Improve…….
I
need to improve on different strategies on reading groups. I think giving students
jobs within the groups can keep them accountable and keep them on task while
they are reading stories. I also need to improve on guided reading in general.
I still struggle on making sure the students are in the right level. I struggle
with the timing and organization of reading groups. Overall, Guided reading is a struggle for me.
Guided reading can be a very daunting task! At first, it was hard for me to have a good handle on the other kiddos and keep them busy while I was teaching a small group. Once my students were trained on what to do and they knew what was expected, it got much easier. I tweak my guided reading time a little each year so that it works best for me. Of course TIME is the biggest factor. It is so hard to get all that I want to do into a predetermined time-slot.
ReplyDeleteI think that your discussions are a great strategy to use. The discussions can be a wonderful tool for you as the teacher to sit back and listen to what they students are getting and not getting from the story.
I struggle with getting them to write a good summary, too. Second graders want to tell all the details. They don't really know how to just tell the main idea or gist of the story.
