Things
I Do And Plan To Do…..
During my couple months of subbing, I see that being
positive with behavioral students does help. Students with behavioral issues
have probably been yelled at a lot. It might be from a parent, guardian or
other authority figures such as a coach or neighbor. Sometimes students just
need a little positive feedback from someone. This is not a perfect fix but it
is much better to praise students when they are doing well rather than being
negative all the time. Students need to know when they are doing something
right. Their self-esteem is sometimes very low so teachers need to be there to
lift them up when they are genuinely doing a great job.
Things I Do Not Do……
I
really like the color wheel method. I think this is a great way to help
classroom management. I do parts of the wheel but not all of them. I like how
each is sectioned such as group activities are inside voices, hands and feet to
self, and follow directions. Teacher instruction is raise hand to speak or
leave area, and eyes on speaker or work. Transitioning is in seat, desk cleared
and eyes on speaker. This sample wheel is a great start. I think if this is
displayed the students would not be confused on how to act during class time. This
can also be a visual reminder incase students want to test the rules or act
out.
Things To I Need To Improve……
I would really like to try to do a point or
money system in my future classroom. I have never done this is a classroom
before or seen a point or money system being used. I have heard great things
from teachers doing a store in their classroom where students can buy or earn
points to get prizes. I think students will appreciate it more if they earn
their way to get a prize. I am not sure really where to start because I know
that it takes a lot of planning and organizing. So if anyone has any pointers
feel free to give me some helpful hints.
I liked the color wheel, too. It's important that students are able to see their expectations. I have a Go/Stop sign that I use in my class that lets students know when they can get up without asking and when they can't. I agree that students do well with a positive behavior system. I use tickets in my classroom and let them cash them in for prizes. It is a lot to manage, but it works well with the students. The biggest problem is being consistent. Some days I forget and not all students get tickets. I want to do better the rest of the year with giving out tickets for good behavior. Good luck with your future classroom!
